COVID-19 Information from NXT Director of Participant Health & Safety, Ian McGinnis

NXT Director of Participant Health & Safety, Ian McGinnis, gives us some helpful tips for staying healthy during the COVID-19 outbreak.

What are the symptoms?

  • Fever

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

How does it spread?

  • COVID-19 spreads from person to person through respiratory droplets. Droplets are produced when an infected person exhales, coughs, or sneezes.

    • The droplets can be directly inhaled by a person standing in close proximity to the infected individual.

    • They can land on a surface (countertop, railing, doorknob) or hand which can be touched by a non-infected individual and transmitted to them when they touch their eyes, nose, or mouth.

  • COVID-19 can be spread by an infected individual even if they’re not experiencing symptoms.

How can you protect yourself?

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water

  • If soap is unavailable, use hand sanitizer

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands

  • Practice social distancing

    • Keep about 6 feet between yourself and others

      • This is about the distance that respiratory droplets can travel from a cough or sneeze.

How can you protect others?

  • It is extremely important that we protect those who are most vulnerable - the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions (heart disease, lung disease, diabetes)

  • Stay home if you’re sick!

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow.

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

  • You can wear a facemask if you’re sick - this prevents your respiratory droplets from being expelled.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
