Top high school players competed this past Saturday at United Sports in Downingtown, PA. Find out who Brett Manney selected as the top 2023 players of the day

The Boys Philly Showcase is the nation's premier individual showcase and attracts elite talent and college coaches from across the country to one of the top venues on the east coast, United Sports in Downingtown, PA. The 11th annual Nike Boys Philly Showcase attracted over 600 athletes and 173 college coaches from the Division l, ll, and lll levels. Players traveled from 27 states and Canada to compete at this one-day event.

The Showcase featured athletes from 2021, 2022 and 2023 graduation years. Players competed throughout the day to be selected for the Fab 40 All-Star team. All-Star recipients received a Nike gear pack with a bag, hat, t-shirt, and a Nike head and shaft. Prior to the start of the All-Star games, the King of the X, took place on field two to determine the event's top face-off man. Surrounded by college coaches, the elusive title of King of the X was ultimately captured by 2022 FO George Kalos from Team 24/7.

2023

ATTACK

Harrison Hanson, 2023, Austin (TX), IronHorse

I highlighted Harrison before the event and he backed me up. Harrison was the safety valve for his team all day. When they need a possession Hanson was the man. If they needed a goal, he was the guy. Someone to create offense from the attack position, it was Hanson again. He was was one man playmaker.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Mark Marino, 2023, Don Bosco Prep (NJ), NJ Riot
  • Thomas Colaco, 2023, Delbarton (NJ), BBL
  • Sam Whitehurst, 2023, Potomac (MD), Next Level
  • Matt Pepe, 2023, Seton Hall Prep (NJ),TriState

MIDFIELD

Jackson Greene, 2023, St. Anthony’s (NY), 91 Bandits

If there was one player who was heads and shoulders above his peers, it was Greene. The versatile midfielder was comfortable dodging at any spot on the field with ease. He could work with picks, dodge down the alley, sweep over the top and did all this with both hands. The rich get richer at St. Anthony’s with Greene in the fold who should be a household name in no time.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Jacob Pacheco, 2023, Valor Christian (CO), Dukes
  • Gavin Burke, 2023, Dominion (VA), VLC
  • Chrishawn Hunter, 2023, Westtown School (PA), PA Roughriders

DEFENSE

Brett Koopman, 2023, Santa Fe Christian (CA), Mad Dog

I love Koopman’s game. How can you not? He plays hard, has great footwork, timely checks, and knows when to slide to cause a turnover or a bad shot. This kid just makes plays all over the defensive end of the field. After talking him up to Mad Dog National Director, Lou Aboyoun, he says Koopman plays up a lot with the 22's and even the 21's. Quite the accomplishment for the young defender from SoCal who is everything you want in a defender.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Nick Sotiropoulos, 2023, Severn School (MD), Annapolis Hawks
  • William Abramson, 2023, Landon (MD), Next Level
  • Ben Caccavo, 2023, Chaminade (NY), Shore 2 Shore

GOALIE

Julian Popowich, Redwood (CA), Alcatraz Outlaws

I am fortunate enough every year to make a trek out to San Francisco to watch the Alcatraz Outlaws tryouts and watch some of the Bay Area’s finest players. Mac Gates (Hofstra) and Evan Beland (2021) have stood out before him and now he is making his mark. There were many talented shooters and as the day went on Popowich started to see the ball better to turn away many easy chances. With his poise and ability to make tough saves look routine Popowich’s travel was worth it proving he belongs among the nation’s elite netminders at the 2023 age group.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Miles Lancaster, 2023, DeMatha Catholic (MD), Next Level
  • Conor Farrell, 2023, Winston Churchhill (MD), DC Express
