Bill Leahy

Director of Coaching & College Guidance / Assistant Coach

Coach William (Bill) Leahy retired, in 2019, as Head Coach at La Salle College High School where he started La Salle’s lacrosse program in 1992. Over his 28 years at La Salle, he achieved an overall record of 512 W – 106 L (318 W – 4 L in the Catholic League) which includes 22 (out of 26) Philadelphia Catholic League Championships and 8 State Championship game appearances, 5 of which earned Pennsylvania State Titles (2004, 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2019).  La Salle’s 2008 team was ranked #1 in the nation by US Lacrosse Magazine.  Coach Leahy coached the 2007 US South Under Armour All American Team and was selected as the Philadelphia Inquirer “Coach of the Year” in 1997 and 2008, as well as the Eastern Pennsylvania US Lacrosse “Coach of the Year” in 2017.

He played high school lacrosse at Calvert Hall College High School (Towson, Maryland) from 1984-1987, then graduated from Loyola College in Maryland where he was a midfielder and face-off specialist for Loyola’s 1990 NCAA Championship finalist team.  From 1995-1996, he played forward for the Philadelphia Wings of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (NLL).

In 2010, Coach Leahy was the first lacrosse coach to be inducted into the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Philadelphia Lacrosse chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. His 2004 State Championship Team was inducted into the La Salle College High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, and in 2017 Coach Leahy was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

He has had the privilege of coaching 260 All-Catholics, 11 League MVPs, 50 US Lacrosse All-Americans, 5 Under Armor All-Americans, 80 All-State players, 10 professionals (MLL/PLL), 1 USA Team player, and 1 NCAA Tewaaraton winner.

In 2016, Bill was an assistant coach for the USA U19 lacrosse team that won a gold medal at the World Games in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada.  At those games, Bill was recognized by the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) with the Graham Lester Spirit of Lacrosse Award for Team USA, an award which recognizes a person from each international team who is very influential to their team’s success, but not often given credit.

He currently resides in Newtown, Pennsylvania with his wife Tara, and their two teenage children, Emily, and Brenden.

With NXT, Coach Leahy has served as assistant coach with NXT since 2016. He is an outstanding resource to the entire club as our Director of Coaching and College Guidance. In that role, Bill supports every NXT team and their coaches throughout the year, making appearances on the field at practices and events, in addition to being available for counsel to any of our players or parents.
